Phil Rosenthal (creator, writer and exec producer of Everybody Loves Raymond, Exporting Raymond) stops by this episode of Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend to talk about his new PBS food and travel show, I’ll Have What Phil’s Having, his love of food and travel, how he met his wife (and why their relationship is predicated on a lie), growing up the child of holocaust survivors, his relationship with his brother, lessons he’s learned over the years about show business, why steak tastes different if you eat it with your bare hands, foods he was squeamish to try, writing jokes for Clinton, his book You’re Lucky You’re Funny: How Life Becomes and Sitcom, the times he quit Raymond and so much more. Plus we took your questions over twitter and did a round of Just Me Or Everyone.

“Fresh Off the Boat” is a good modern sitcom that isn't overly zany. Give it a shot!

Wow, nobody told me Phil Rosenthal looks like a cross between Josh Lucas and Jay Mohr!

Phil was a great “get” for your show Alison! I remember hearing him on your former employers shows (the name of your former employer eludes me at present…) a couple of times and Phil always “brung” it then as well. I also loved his exporting Raymond documentary. This dude may have a future in TV and/or film if he just keeps working at it…

I also used to think
that steak was terrible. Being in a large family, I grew up on cheap,
overcooked steak and didn't know how good it could be until I was an adult. I love what Phil had to say about
sensitivity. I think my creative husband could completely relate. Phil: “This is already the most in depth
interview I've ever done.” Whoohoo! I love it when guests say that to
Alison! And he said it to her about her expressing that she'd ultimately like
to do an interview show for TV. What
Phil said about his guilt about being mean to his brother was sweet and
relatable. I love, love Norman Lear.
He's so sharp and thoughtful! I hope Alison will have him on the show
sometime!
