Couldn’t’ve kept him locked away just a little longer? Shek is the least-talented of all the Carolla Orbiters, by a factor of … infinity.

Good episode. I’m not even a DoT fan, and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Jesus. The sad part is that Shek was surprised he was the least funny person on Sports Geniuses.

The Shek has grown on me over the years. At first, back in the radio days, I didn’t like him because I don’t like sports and he was too loud for me. But now he talks about lots of things – his kids and stuff – which is much more interesting to me than sports. He can also be sweet and even a bit vulnerable at times and it’s endearing. I find him funnier these days, a little freer.

I love it when Gary “has to” explain something to Alison (i.e. MDMA = Moly). It’s adorable and Alison is so authentic and unassuming. Gary loves Alison, by the way. She is his sister from another mister and he protects her like he is a mama bear. IT IS SO SWEET I CAN’T EVEN STAND IT.

Dr. Drew has good logical sense (usually) but he’s also a little arrogant (of course what physician isn’t?) and pretty judgmental at times. He is NOT trained as a mental health therapist even though he has specialized in addictions medicine- he is a medical doctor, period. MDs are verrrrrrrrrry different from therapists. Ask anyone who has gone to therapy at one place and had med management through any type of MD or other prescription writer. Miles apart.

(Pierce Hawthorne would say “streets ahead”)

To say that Drew isn’t trained as a mental health therapist is a somewhat incomplete statement, given the purview of his duties treating drug addicts, and more importantly the fact that he ran a psych hospital. It is true that because he’s a physician that he has a more cut-and-dry view of these sorts of things than a psychologist or therapist might.

The thing with Drew, is that he’s spent decades working with people who are either lying to his face, or distorting the truth (addicts, codependents, mentally ill, etc). So Whenever anyone says anything, he’s trying to cut to the chase and figure out what they really mean. I can imagine this this would be rather unnerving if you’re on the other end of it.

Carolla is no shrinking violet, but even he has made comment on Drew’s sometimes harsh bedside manner, which is a pretty big hint.

I really wish Daves of Thunder got the credit it deserves. I listen to a lot of podcasts (including the Carolla “family” religiously) and DoT was my all time favorite, interestingly enough Alison and her thursday shows capture a little of the feel DoT had, and not just because it has Donovan

I think Badabingo makes a good point about Drews training dictating how he assesses situations. It is pretty much the consensus belief amongst scientists and researchers that having a m.d. ruins your ability to think didactically. Med schools are run much more like a trade school than most people think (probably why Adam shows so much aptitude towards it). Doctors are trained to do B when they see A, or do C if B doesn’t work, there is a very black and white feel to a Doctors training and this is probably how Drew comes across to Alison.

    I totally agree.
Dr. Drew got bit by the entertainment industry bug and quit doing “rounds” quite some time ago.
Dr. Bruce is more of an official emergency room doctor out of Redlands who moonlights as an entertainment doctor.
This is why Adam gives Dr. Drew some grief over his HLN adventures.

Anyway great show – keep Dave coming back – I wish I would have caught the DoT experience. maybe try to bring it back.

    Great interview Alison.

    Take careful.

P.S. : please get married ASAP if you are planning children with your fiance. The having kids in your late/early thirties has challenges. I am divorced with grown teenage kids with a six year old. My experiences with my young children when I was in my late twenty’s / early thirties is definitely different than in my forties with my young daughter of six years. Adam seems to be experiencing the same deal – except him and Lynette have nothing to compare it to since they waited.
Please remember that it is never a good time to have kids – except if you wait to late for the “perfect” time and then you are not able to bear children.
Waiting has it’s drawbacks. Good Luck and have a great time “getting pregnant” if that is what you both choose to do.
    Do not over think it.
You only regret the things in life that you do not do.

At 1:00 Alison says ‘where you an ass to the blondes? The hard up blondes?’ Wow, Alison! I think that statement caused Dave to lose his train of thought…

Great show–one of the best shows since the beginning. Alison and Dameshek make a great team, riffing off each other. Shek has great stories to tell and Alison does as well–humor woven like fine tapestry.
