Mike Lawrence stops by Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend to talk about learning to accept your parents for who they are, wanting to fail on his own terms, switching from poetry to comedy, being into comic books, Comic Con, meeting his wife, regret and sadness, growing up with a standup comic mother, learning to drive as an adult, childhood trauma, how nerds make the worst bullies, fighting to get paid, the movie Up, what happened to breakfast and so much more. Plus we took your questions over twitter and did a round of Just Me Or Everyone.

For people on both sides confused about the recent comic popularity I think it's a couple things. It is a genre of mythology, which is why us comics nerds were 30 years too early. But what has really caused it to grow now is that the need for content and the availability of special effects has resulted in people tapping into what is essentially warehouses packed full of storyboards.
Would agree with Alison that Mike Lawrence is very funny and you should check out his stuff in general but I would definitely suggest people check out Nerd of Mouth, the podcast he co hosts. In addition to @midnight, stand up, etc

So glad Alison encouraged Mike to be kinder to himself in regards to the shame he still seems to carry regarding “the cobwebby basement summer”. Solid analysis and empathy, my dear! Love it.
My Notes: I love when guests
comment on the show's songs. I think playing them for the guests to hear rather
than inserting them later is the best way to do it. Mike's “You're not my mother, so I won't
disappoint you” was funny. I also
liked your Rice-a-roni reference.:) Wow!
How fascinating that Mike's dad was a good dad while he was growing up, but not
so good once he became an adult. While
it was nice of you to try to make him feel better about being a moocher/taking
advantage of his friend's generosity, I do think that it's good that he's
become self-aware enough to own his actions there. He doesn't need to beat
himself up about it, but to know that he shouldn't have done that is a good
thing. Then again, if that's some of the worst that he's done and something
that he feels most guilty about in his life, you're right that he's doing
pretty good.:) I agree with his thoughts
on making sure that you're paid fairly for your work/talent. Even in my profession,
it's important to make sure that we're paid appropriately in order not to
devalue our profession/specialization. Likewise, I think, in a way, people are
taken more seriously in their professions if there's a monetary value on their
work, though it's certainly more pressure to do a good job too. I like the comment about Pixar movies being
sad enough for adults to like them.:) Hilarious
that he didn't even know how to turn on the car for his driver's test. It's got
to be hard to learn how to drive as an adult.
Once again, you've got yet another guest saying that he talked about things
on your podcast that he's never talked about on others! His bullying stories broke my heart a little.
Poor little Mike. I don't understand how somebody can be a bully. I agree that it's awful when parents shame
their kids on Facebook. It definitely is parents bullying their kids. Nice reference to “Hello Walls”, from
Mike! Loved it when you told Mike that
he wasn't making you feel any better.
“More like bummershoot.” Ha.
