Hey sweetheart – I'm surprised your therapist used the word “erratic” regarding appts. That's kind of a judgy word, especially for a therapist. Of course, therapists are human and are not perfect, but my experience has been that good therapists have unconditional positive regard for their clients and are happy to be flexible with appts. That doesn't mean they don't call me on my shit – they do – but to be kinda pissy about not having a standing appt is kinda like, um come on now. Especially in LA where lots of clients have entertainment industry schedules. Also, I think that analysts are more standing appt type people – narrative therapy just kinda lend itself to that sort of schedule perhaps.
If you decide you want to look for a different therapist, I encourage you to look for someone that specializes in anxiety disorders and has a PhD in clinical psychology or a PsyD in clinical psychology. Serious – they are more money (not sure of your insurance situation) but so worth it that you will not believe it. There are plenty of great masters (MA / MS) level therapists out there, but sometimes it is hard to find one among the newbies / bad ones as the field is quite saturated. Of course, I'm sure there are some PhDs/PsyDs that suck, but just putting this out there. Getting a PhD level therapist literally changed my life – she is so amazing!
Hugs!
