ARIYNBF 269 with Jack Burditt

Jack Burditt (TV producer/writer extraordinaire; The Mindy Project, 30 Rock) stopped by this episode of Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend to talk about working on Tina Fey’s new series, sobriety, how he met his wife, fatherhood, his days as a music critic, Six Flags, Lockheed, writing rooms on Frasier, Just Shoot Me and 30 Rock and so much more. We also spoke about grief, mourning, therapy and the family tragedy he experienced two and a half years. And we did a round of Just Me Or Everyone (click here to see the JMOEs from this episode).

Great interview. It was nice to hear a success story against the odds. What a sad tragedy that Jack went through. Alison, you did a wonderful job asking the right questions to allow Jack to share his experience with grief.

So look, I don't know…anything…about the entertainment biz, Hollywood, or podcasting. But couldn't this be Alison Rosen's “thing” for the Monday pods? Interviewing important people behind the scenes of TV and movies. Is anyone else doing that? Tina Fey ain't gonna show up on a podcast; but, then again, Jack Burditt ain't going on Kimmel. And he's interesting, important, thoughtful. Leave the vacuous “stars” and pretty faces for other venues (not that that describes Tina Fey!). Wouldn't it be cool to hear from show runners and writers like Graham Yost or Tim van Patten, or a costume designer like the awesome Janie Bryant?

But maybe those people are even busier than the stars?

Thanks for a great interview! Alison has a way to dig deeper without being penetrating. I'd have immediately redirected after Mr. Burditt mentioned the family tragedy. So glad he shared, and I am selfishly so grateful they both opened up so deeply, and personally. As a man, I can relate to the inherent need to protect loved ones, especially women and children. I can only hope he finds some solace in the lives of his two surviving grandchildren, with hopefully more to come. I am particularly touched by the OoB experience of Ayla (sp?).

I am also a big 30 Rock fan. I loved the “show within a show” BitchHunter. The credited producers were Ben Silverman and Jack Burditt; if I'm not mistaken. Easily obtainable online was the fact that BS was a former NBC exec who was a wannabe playboy, untalented, and loathed by those who worked with him. He lasted less than 2 years, and green-lit many terrible shows. Great joke-within-a-joke. (So 30 Rock). I never, however, understood why JB was also credited. He seemed to be a beloved Hollywood figure, in stark contrast to Mr. Silverman. Also, still working with 30 Rock. I'm guessing now it was an inside joke. Perhaps due to all of the unsuccessful projects he was previously attached to?
