Recent episodes of The Adam Carolla Show

So I think I’m a little overdue in posting some of the recent episodes of The Adam Carolla Show that I’ve been on. I posted them on twitter and facebook but not here. Also right now I’m sitting in a room and the sun is coming through the window and blinding me. Stupid sunshine. I can see why no one wants to live in California.

Okay seriously, I need some kind of eye protection. Why hasn’t anyone invented that? If this entertainment thing doesn’t work out I’m going to invent something to wear on your eyes to shield them from the sun. I’ll call them… Sun Goggles and I’ll probably become some kind of millionaire.

On the most recent episode we chatted about the Golden Globes and then I could barely get out a story about a cat called to jury duty without laughing which has pretty much never happened to me on air or on TV. Maybe I’ve felt it nearly happen once on Red Eye (but not while I was talking) and possibly on my own Ustream show but not like last night where I really wondered if I was going to be able to finish the story. And then later Lemmy dropped by and we broke up. And also I worried that I talked too much on the show which is an ongoing concern I have… trying to find the right balance. I once had a dream years ago that everyone was telling me I was too loud. Sometimes I feel like I need to turn my personality down. But then sometimes I feel like I need to turn it up. I sound like a shampoo commercial.

And then on Friday’s show Eugene Mirman dropped by and we all played Hobo Power and I nearly puked. Also Adam questioned me about my dating life and what I’m looking for in a guy and as I later explained on Sunday’s Ustream show I was surprised at how inarticulate I sounded when answering the questions which I think was a result of not having really thought about these things in awhile, for better or worse. What I didn’t explain, but what you all who reguarly read my blog and follow me know is that I moved back to CA under family crisis type circumstances and so dating has been low on my list. Then again, that doesn’t really explain why dating was low on my list while I was living in New York also. Maybe I’m dead inside?

We also talked about honeybuns, abortion, how wrestler Jacob Volkman regrets his comments about wanting to take on Obama, Shirley Phelps-Roper being a media whore, [side note: if you want to see something awesome, check out this clip of Julie Banderas confronting Phelps-Roper], and… uh oh… now I’m forgetting which day we did which story. Well I’m leaving out quite a few stories but we also discussed OK Cupid, Jared Laughner (a lot of Laughner talk), laws prohibiting protesting funerals, the surge in gun sales in the wake of the Arizona spree, crazy stuff Laughner posted in online gaming forums, Conan, Leno and Letterman and more.

And then on Thursday’s show Harry Hamlin dropped by and now I’ll never think of the term friendly fire in the same way. We also talked about an uptick in dine and dashing and Camille Grammer on Stern suggesting Kelsey likes to cross dress and more.

And on Wednesday Larry Miller came on the show and we talked about cults and paprika and Snoopy’s brother. We also played hypothetical road trip which I’m extremely good at. Beginner’s luck? Hardly.

Loving that you’re on the show fulltime now. Lemmy was one laidback all-star rocker today.

You’re doing a FANTASTIC job on the show…keep it up!

    Alison,
Great job so far on Carolla!! I don’t think you should worry that you are talking too much. I can’t imagine that Adam would LET you talk too much. Plus you actually have something to say when you talk(unlike some of the potential news girls). So keep up the good work, I look forward to listening every day!

Rest assured you’re not talking too much Alison…you’ve done just a seamless job blending into that environment (& if you don’t believe me, just read the usually harsh Carolla message boards. The fans love you). Just a fantastic job so far!

So far, I’ve listened to every podcast of AC’s show where AliRo has been the news girl, and all I can think is, “Alison, be quiet!! Then at other points, I’m thinking, “Alison great point!!” or “Alison that was a hilarious comment!” Sometimes, I’ve thought, “Alison seems kinda quiet! She should do that, ‘Hai’ thing that AC was talking about.” Anyway, it’s only a couple times I’ve thought, “Alison, be quiet!” but that’s cuz everyone is trying to talk at the same time. Once you find your groove, you will be totally more awesome than you are now!

Alison, I think you’re doing a very good job considering the circumstances–being the news girl for someone like Adam requires some specific skills, including a sharp wit and confidence. Out of all the candidates, you fit the best with Adam. I like your addition, you’re smart, you’re funny, and you are doing a better job than you think with staying out of Adam’s way. I think the best thing for you is to be ready to perform in those instances where Adam defers to you–I like what you have to say and I’m pleased they went with you. Your shocking resemblance to Teresa is amusing, but you’re your own performer. I look forward to hearing more out of you within the show.

Keep up the good work, and keep working towards being the best newsgirl you can be.

You’re great, Alison. Just takes time to get in harmony with the Ace Man’s rhythm. Took Theresa a while, as I recall. But keep chiming in. Nice work.

Adam definitely needs a foil. Someone to challenge him on some of the more illogical and inconsistent statements he makes. He’s good at judging human behaviour but terrible on “macro” stuff like politics and human rights. He’s quick to judge others but blind to his own outrageous shortcomings (or else tries to claim that he’s a victim of his own childhood and can do nothing to change his own callous behaviour). Still, I find him irresistibly funny – in a Man Show kind of way. However ultimately he’s going to have to evolve his act because the whole complaining-judgemental-chauvanist-white-guy thing is a bit one-dimensional and has a shelf life. There’s a role for someone like you to be the catalyst for him to develop into something more interesting in the longer term. You’re going to have to bite your tongue for a while and win the trust of him and his audience but I think someone a little smarter and more assertive like yourself will be a very good thing for that show.

Alison: It sounds like you are over-thinking this. You are not talking too much – you are chiming in perfectly. Follow your gut instincts – you have made the show better with your commentary and quips. Don’t change a thing – you are doing great!!!!!!

I really like it that so far I’m the only person that has said, “Alison be quiet!” 😀

I didn’t actually read your blog post here (sorry), but just wanted to say that I’m loving you so far on the show. When they were doing the search, the other women just didn’t fit. They drove me nuts, actually, because the fit was so bad. Glad you’re on the team!

As a fan of Carolla and the podcast, you’ve been in right zone so far- not too quiet, not talking too much.

Also, I’m pretty sure you’re not dead inside. If you were dead inside, you’d be dead outside, too. You’re just bottled up.

If I may add something- I noticed you and Carolla talking at the same time, twice or so during the most recent episode. Carolla talks quite a bit, so I would suggest that if you say something and notice that the both of you started at the same time, that you cede the joke. The two of you think sufficiently differently that you’ll likely be saying two different things anyway, so you’ll have time to chime in.
