Comedian and author Greg Behrendt stopped by Dining Room Studios to talk about all sorts of things including the complicated effect being a consultant on Sex and The City had on his life and career and the way he spun out when fans of the book and cultural phenomenon he co-authored, He’s Just Not That Into You, began showing up in droves at his comedy shows. Women wanted to hear him do a “TED talk about relationships” but he was there to do standup. We also discussed his decision to host  a daytime talk show, getting diagnosed with cancer while on tour in Australia, fatherhood, drug addiction and the impact it’s had on his marriage, Janeane Garafalo, Oprah, music, sobriety, podcasts, upcoming projects and so much more. Nikki Glaser may be the first repeat Monday guest we’ve had in Dining Room Studios which puts her in an elite group of one, despite that fact that her therapist Donna tries to impress upon her she’s just average. The last time Nikki and I talked, she was shooting a talk show pilot about sex for Comedy Central. She’s now moved to Los Angeles and is hosting that same show, Not Safe with Nikki Glaser. On this episode we talked about a video she claimed was satisfying but which slightly traumatized Jeff and me, the guilt she feels for being tired all the time, working with her boyfriend who is also an executive producer on Not Safe, the time she fainted on stage, liking to talk about things people don’t normally talk about, getting over childhood hurts, first kisses, feeling betrayed as a teen when friends matured at a faster rate and so much more. I knew Gustavo way back when I was leaving the OC Weekly and he was starting there. He came out of nowhere it seemed and was suddenly writing a zillion articles a week which, I heard at the time, didn’t exactly endear him to the other writers. He went on to gain attention and notoriety with his now nationally syndicated “Ask a Mexican” column, author three books and become the editor-in-chief of the paper. He also regularly appears on radio programs and is a consulting producer on Fox’s animated Bordertown. We chatted about his beginnings and how he got to where he is today including growing up the son of “Mexican hillbillies,” not quite fitting in, falling in love with film and Pulp Fiction in particular, being a nerd, being repeatedly unaware of office politics, the satirical letter that changed his life, his relationship with former OC Weekly editor Will Swaim and so much more. I’ve been a fan of actor, writer and comedian Michael Ian Black for years so it was a real treat to have him stop by my podcast during one of his trips to Los Angeles.
