Writer and television personality Dave Holmes returns to the show to talk about his fantastic new book Party of One: A Memoir in 21 Songs (out June 28) which you’re going to want to pre-order, not just because it opens with a discussion of Blind Melon. On this episode we talked about Dave’s love of pop culture, why Vanderpump people are Dave’s least favorite kind of people, his one experience with cocaine, wanting at various times to be part of a group, coming out to his parents, the way a Catholic upbringing stays with you, being in a love bubble, the time he had sex with a woman on a fact-finding mission, overly narrow definitions of masculinity, writing about politics, dogs, dog food, Small Wonder, MTV VJs he’s still friends with and so much more. We also did a round of Just Me Or Everyone.

“Real men don’t not eat dog food.” That’s amazing. I need that on a T-shirt. I eat the dog biscuits I make myself (not “for” myself but for my dogs) because I know what went in them. My daughter asked me why I don’t wear pink because “Real Men Wear Pink”, I had to explain to her that real men wear what they want and aren’t concerned about what others think. If that should include pink or a kilt, so be it (or as Colonel/Nerdpunk/Chef Jeff would put it: “Real men don’t not wear pink.”
