Jen Kirkman returns to Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend to talk about all sorts of stuff including her new book which I loved so much I wanted to crawl inside and live there, I Know What I’m Doing And Other Lies I Tell Myself: Dispatches from a Life Under Construction (out April 12th but available for pre-order now), Twitter battles which aren’t really battles, Bernie Bros, commonsenseytocin, “lulz,” how she used to see herself, the feeling that one’s too loud, Mittens, fun coats, how she chooses a restaurant, Ronnie Kirkman, Australia, relationships and so much more. We also took your questions over Twitter and did a round of Just Me Or Everyone.

Yes, for me it is that I’m a Tiger, and i have to be chained to keep me from damaging others. I hate being the Tiger but in a way I’m proud of it too.

The “adultification” is actually a thing, but it’s usually called “parentlization”. Like many things, there is a huge spectrum when it comes to this concept but the world only really hears about the “scary” end of the spectrum (such as in severe neglect cases). Parents with the best of intentions can and do cause it in kids because they think they are “being honest” or “preparing them for the real world” when actually they are placing developmentally inappropriate expectations on their children. That’s one way it is done, anyways. Chaos, abuse, lack of consistency, parental alcoholism and/or drug abuse, all kinds of stuff where kids don’t get to be as carefree as they need to be per their developmental stage (and genes, temperament, other stuff too).
