Statistics, Probability, Tension and Soup

ARIYNBF Statistics Probability Tension and Soup

Ok look, this was a weird show. There was tension, embarrassment, statistics and probability (part of our fledgling “What Does #AL Know” segment), egg talk, a discussion of soup, music and whether it’s better to have a lot of lights on or very few. Also we did a round of Just Me Or Everyone!

Download the episode from iTunes.

This show is brought to you by Amazon (clear your cookies first and what the hell, make a bookmark!), Casper (use promo code BESTFRIEND) and Betterment.  And shop in my Amazon store!

Whoa. Hot stats talk. I think I felt my test statsticals move.

May I propose an option for the “#What does Al Know?” Thanks. So, everyone gets to ask Al one (or 3) yes or no question(s). These he should answer honestly to the best of his knowledge. He can also be asked questions but he can bluff. The group can ask Jenna (unlimited) questions regarding her knowledge of Al’s knowledge. But she is also playing, so she can bluff also. Then the secret sauce is the round table discussion about everyone’s different theories as to why Al does (or doesn’t) know something.

Greg is right on Automatic for the People. And U2’s recent album is great- I love how Daniel phrased that he doesn’t think of them as how other people think of them. I guess I like U2 and just think other people’s crowd-sourced opinions are over-rated.

I’m totally a Jeff wannabe when it comes to lighting. Beautifully said and what a complete system. And Daniel’s fart assessment is spot on.

Hilarious listening to you guys trying to figure out math!

If each egg has a 30% chance of success and you implant 3 eggs (and each one is independent, which I’m not sure is true), then each one has a 70% chance of failure. You’ll get at least one success as long as not all of them fail. They’ll all fail with a 70%x70%x70% = 34.3% chance, so there’s a 100% – 34.3% = 65.7% chance of success.

And btw, just to confuse you further, the chance of twins is not 9%. There are 3 ways to get twins, each of which has a probability of 30%x30%x70% = 6.3%, for a total of 18.9%. Basically, here’s the breakdown for 3 eggs:

    no baby: 34.3% (=70%x70%x70%)
    single: 44.1% (=3×70%x70%x30%)
    twins: 18.9% (=3×70%x30%x30%)
    triplets: 2.7% (=30%x30%x30%)

    You’re welcome. 🙂

Humor is cultural and therefore learned 🙂 Watch a toddler play – they will fart like crazy and not bat an eye about it. They completely ignore it – until (if) they learn that sound means someone’s going to check their diaper or an adult or older child will chuckle over it. Even then, it takes them a beat to make the connection (depending on the kid). Some things it’s like they make the connection from across a crowded room and other things they have to see / hear / experience 10 times before they make an association. It’s fascinating.
