Was going to make a snide remark about “it's as if I've never done anything in front of a camera”, but then you got into some deep self-revelation type stuff that really took the wind out of my snarky sails.  Sad face.

I'm 35, living at home again, no job, no money, no real friends, and I STILL haven't been to college. So if you're ever feeling down, just smile and say “at least I'm not that loser” Cheers!

I feel ya on this one totally. I used to be so advanced and ahead of all my friends and now they're ahead of me. i dont feel like im doing awful, but that im definitely not where i need to be  and its hard not to compare yourself to everyone else, but it's just like i definitely should be further than i am and it's like im in the purgatory(do jews believe in purgatory?:)) of life. not really going forward but not going back and just trying to get ahead, but still behind

I think the idea of 'what does it mean to be an adult' (man or woman) is a common modern conundrum.  I was in the Army, the infantry even, 20 years ago (glerg!) and I still don't know if I'm really a man now or not.  Modern media throws a lot of expectations at us about where we're supposed to be in our lives and when.  I'm supposed to have a wife, a white picket fence, and 2.3 kids by now, but I have none of those things.  Life hasn't turned out that way for me.  Doesn't mean it turned out worse, just different.  It's easy to buy into that idea and feel like you aren't successful or grown up because you haven't hit certain milestones at particular ages, but I think you'll be happier if you don't worry about what's going on around you so much as what's going on inside you.  Are you happy with where your life is now?  Hopefully the answer is at least: mostly yes.  Then look at things you want to improve and take action.  When I look at you, I see a woman.  Maybe, that'll help?  Our culture and media have a lot of opinions about what it means to be a man or woman, but you're smart enough to evaluate all that, decide what's important to you and then, I hope, find some peace of mind.
You're doing great on the show, keep up the good work.  I really like your laugh and I appreciate the laughs you've given me, thanks!  =)

    Very interesting stuff.

I often contemplate my placement at my age. I'm a 29 year-old, single college grad that lives in an a one-bedroom apartment in the midwest. Most of my friends have been married for a at least a couple years and have kids. Many of them own a home or are in the process of buying one. I'm currently working my way up the ladder professionally and several of my superiors are a couple years younger than I am, if not younger than that. Typically the people I may compare myself to have taken a different path. I prefer to think I have taken a more unconventional, “enlightened” route (maybe the route's name is denial? lol).

My stance is that it doesn't matter where you are at now, it's all about where you are going. I get the impression that some of the people in positions I might envy myself to be in are slightly envious of me. People like us, single and mobile, have more options and freedom to explore. When you've “settled” you drop an anchor and lose a lot of that. I am confident, as I am sure you are with yourself, that I'll make continual progress and get to my desired endpoint. With additional experience and age I know I'll make better decisions now than I would have a few years ago if I were in their shoes.

In the meantime, enjoy yourself, especially when you witness someone your age have their young child vomit on them, talk about their home repairs or about how their spouse is a d-bag. You'll get there and you'll be better prepared,  Alison-san :).

I totally get what you mean, Alison.  I kind of think that it's something common for our time.  There are a lot of structures in our society that reinforce this kind of behavior, too.  We're all bombarded from an early age that “you are who you are; you're not what you do.”  But a lot of people still feel some sort of entitlement to the jobs that they have, which reinforces the opposite and causes some confusion.  Additionally, when you lose that job you feel “entitled to,” there are a lot of safety nets to keep you from committing to some sort of other self-definition: welfare, food stamps, family support, etc.  Maybe what we need in order to get over this and feel like complete adults is to have no safety nets, only consequences.

Or maybe I drank too much vodka this afternoon.

Also: it looks like you're wearing the same top as in your ACE Podcast promo picture to the right.

Hey Alison. I disagree. I think this was one of your better video post. Your openness and honesty was particularly compelling. The 7+ mins really flew by. I'm glad I caught this today because I've been feeling the exact same way lately. I find I relate you quite a bit. Hopefully we'll get it all figured out. And at the end of the day you're still awesome and have a fun job!

    Hi Alison,

Great show today. Don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re going to have great success with Ace. It’s refreshing to listen to a mature advanced thinker such as yourself. Random segue, please provide an update on the pre-drug rehab and the pre-pre-pregnancy book…I haven't heard you read a post in weeks. I've been a huge fan… well, a big fan of the podcast and Ace in general for many a year. You and bald B are so hilarious and I just want to hear more of you. Blah Blah Blog is so fantastic by the way.
P.S You are the best girl named Alison that I’m aware of.

Perhaps you feel unsettled due to all the outstanding warrants?

I know what you mean about not feeling like an adult sometimes.  Most
people have some preconceived notion of how their life is “supposed to
go,” and inevitably fall short in one way or another.  I'm pretty sure
having a red mechanical pencil is an important step for everyone,
though.  Anyway, you are definitely one of my top 5 favorite Alisons.

Where you SHOULD be and where you would EXPECT yourself to be are very different… in my opinion. Don't burden yourself with “shoulds”. I can relate, though. I expected myself to be finished with school, owning a house, and having at LEAST a girlfriend of several(?) years(?).
I'm almost finished with school, plan on buying a house in 5 years, and dating you.

While I was watching this video, Alison, I was thinking about the biography of Bobby Fischer I watched last night. Talk about someone who was accelerated in one area to the exclusion of others. Fischer was a chess prodigy at a very young age and then became world champion at the age of 29 by beating Russia's Boris Spassky. Fischer's game #6 is still thought by many to be the best game of chess ever played because of the way he dominated the board and controlled the movements of his opponent.

But almost immediately after that match he started to go downhill. He lost the championship by default 3 years later, eventually lost his U.S. citizenship, became anti-American, and died in 2008 at age 64. Over the years he became bitter and paranoid, even thinking the Russians were bombarding him with radiation and other goofy things like that. Very sad for someone who started out with a unique gift in life.

Life is what it is. Very few of us end up doing and achieving what we imagined when we were young. Don't miss out on life because it's not going exactly the way you want or thought it would. And for God's sake, just be thankful you aren't married to Anthony Weiner.

You work in an industry which glorifies youth and denies maturity. All the divorce and plastic surgery and obsession with being pencil thin are just a few of the symptoms. Maybe that has influenced you.

I don't know about you, but everybody I know who feels this way still takes money from their parents.
