Jenna, that is a good look. Holy shit, did I just say that? ARIYNBF must be increasing my estrogen.

Ha! I'm listening in real time so I said that before you mentioned your estrogen treatments. It is also quite dramatic because right now I don't know if you die during the episode by coughing to death.

A couple thoughts, you don't really owe anyone any explanations, so talk if you want to and don't if you don't want. I think (people like me who understand reality) understand the basic plot (and don't need or want salacious details for our own desire for drama or schadenfreude). And the people who don't, what can they do to you anymore anyway? Do you even really want them around? Do they have great reputations and pull in the industry? There are plenty of reality-based people who don't just love bullying as a comedy schtick.

Btw, you keep talking about certain person as if they were human. They simply don't have the brain wiring. It is like criticizing someone for being bad at curls when they are born without a bicep. If anyone wants to bet money on the results of a functional MRI I'll take that bet. He will score high on the sociopathy/psychopathy/narcissism- not clinically high, but that's not what we are talking about. Who, by the way didn't realize this the first time they saw certain person on certain show in the middish 90's that rhymes with loveline?

I completely agree! Talk about it if you want to and don't talk about it if you don't. If you're doing it because it'll be cathardic for you, then please do clarify/explain/whatever all that you want. But if you're doing it to try to appease those who blindly support Carolla, nothing you'll say will convince them anyway at this point. Your fans love you and would easily put your character up against your former employer's any day! Not everyone is a Carolla fan and even fewer are unwilling to acknowledge that he has glaring character flaws. So, say what feels right to you.
I laughed outloud several times during this episode and stayed up way to late to listen, because I didn't want to wait to hear it. Great episode and I'm glad that you survived the coughing episode!:) Also, I'm glad that you got Chef Jeff a microphone.:)

Your former employer (not to be mentioned by name here…) is the pure definition of someone being totally tone deaf, delusional, grandiose and living on his own planet.
Alison, if he now says that he´s completely over you, just think about how many of us his former listeners and fans are now completely over him. I myself am for sure!

I had to go listen to Stern to hear what “corolla” said. Never seems to get any clearer. Still same old bullshit story as always. Who wakes up one day after 4 years and fires an employee by email? Adam has his “pirate” ship over there. I too did a little “pirating” this week. I downloaded (illegally I might ad) that p.o.s. movie Road Hard. Adams “acting” was like watching a cardboard cutout. Maybe he was drunk the entire time, IDK. Glad I didn't spend any $$ on that crap ass adventure. The movie would have been better if Adam was not in it. Glad to see the real talent Jimmy Kimmel is doing well.

The meme on FE is “aspergy.” There are two parts to this common amateur diagnosis (and btw, I am very amateur): there is the “comedy savant” aspect where he can make analogous connections between almost anything he's ever seen or heard before and then there is the social aspect. I don't think he's aspergy. He's also not blatantly sadistic in that he doesn't seem to particularly enjoy causing distress. I suspect he just has the “ability” to tune out empathy, possibly because it gets crowded out by all the other thoughts he can't tune out. Or perhaps even more likely, in my amateur opinion, he drowned his sensitive inner child in the bathtub in order to survive his neglectful upbringing. Empathy was so raw and anxiety-producing and painful that his brain effectively stomped it out. Probably all bullshit.

Personally, I love it when you vent about your former employer. I understand why you want to censor yourself, but rest assured I think most of your audience – at least those who are familiar with ACS – felt like the rug was pulled out from under them almost as much as it was from you. It's validating to hear your outrage because I'm outraged too. Side note: I prefer real conversation to fake energy.

I understand that you're very averse to conflict, but you're in a conflict whether you like it or not; You Know Who has seen to that. I say this as someone who has tremendous respect for you, and I'm sorry if it comes off as more than a little harsh, but letting your former employer take charge of the narrative while you essentially remain silent doesn't make you look classy. It doesn't make you look like you're taking the high road or remaining above the fray. It makes you look like you're conceding the argument to him, and that's incredibly frustrating to someone who abandoned the pirate ship over his blatant lies and deceptions.

I'm a fairly aggressive person (especially when someone screws me over) so feel free to take this with a large grain of salt. It's plain to me that you need to get these things off your chest (or else it wouldn't keep coming up), and your former employer has no reservations about being dishonest when he's questioned about your firing. Because there was so much outrage among your fans, he will be asked about it again and again. Ironically, a member of Dining Room Studios wringing his hands and urging you to move on accomplishes exactly the opposite. I urge you to either to get the entire truth out there, or ignore the issue. Please stop diving into the subject only to retreat at the halfway mark. Just from your tone, I can tell it frustrates you. I do think you'll feel better if you lay out the truth; if you get it over with, you'll finally be able to focus on becoming a mother. You definitely don't need to carry this stress into your pregnancy.

Again, the above is from the point of view of a staunch supporter, and I hope you take it that way.

I'm confused. She did address the situation pretty in depth last month. While I support her if she wants to talk about it and I think it was out of line for Dustin to stop her, I don't see how she looks like she's conceding to Carolla, since she did address it. She can't win. As you said, if she doesn't talk about it, people accuse her of not having good arguments aginst what Carolla said about her and they attack her, which they did before she finally dared to address it in February. However, if she talks about it, people (many of them being the same people) attack her by calling her names, whiny, unclassy, trying to capilize on what happened, not capable of letting it go, manipulative, etc. So, at this point, I only want her to talk more about it if that's what she feels is right, not because of pressure from people. I do feel like she wants to talk about it, since that's what she said on Thursday's episode and because she is an honest/open person. So, I hope she can bring herself to follow her heart and she can tell Dustin (whom I actually do normally enjoy a lot) to HGFY on this topic.:)

“Side note: I prefer real conversation to fake energy.”

The biggest problem with “energy” is that Alison is a people person so she does best when she interacts with many people. The weekend show would be better if she added at least one more person to it.

I do like how Alison is making the show more polished with new drops and jingles. For example, the chat jingle is great! Little things like the “Al Chat” drop make the show better. (Although the dog barking sound should be replaced with real Wendy barks.)

I'd prefer to get it right than to pile on, although my opinion certainly wouldn't be viewed as complimentary. However a correct diagnosis might help. But mostly I figure Alison needs to work through what happened to her for the last four years and the ultimate unavoidable close to that chapter.

I am becoming a New Fan of ARIYNBF….. I never listened until she left the Ace-Man's show. I missed her news, thus I checked her podcast out and now every Friday I listen to her cast of folks…… I am still a huge Adam fan and always will be (started listening to him on Love Line in 1995) ….. But I will now listen to this Podcast in addition to Adam's plethora of shows….. Sucks she got fired, but not shocked how it went down ….. Oh well, move on and continue grow, entertain and make me laugh. It was great to hear you mentioned on Stern this week…. I think it is time to get over how you got fired (Sorry it is annoying and not worth over analyzing to death)…. Cheers! see you Friday mornings.

I disagree that she needs more people in order to derive energy, since I think that her one-on-one interviews are second to none. I like her Saturday shows with Daniel and don't feel that it needs more energy, but I can see how it would be difficult to talk with more energy if you're a married couple used to talking in a low-key, casual manner to each other.
I do think that the fake dog barking drops are too much, but a drop of Wendy herself barking would be fun.:)

My 2 cents- the “energy” thing was absolutely great as a bit, and possibly the highlight of the episode. But I don't feel a particular need for more energy? The weekend shows are definitely more laid-back, but I've accepted them as being a different animal, as I do all 3 shows you upload. But you mainly seem to have an issue with wanting more energy on the weekend shows, so maybe try there? So far I've been enjoying the shows as per usual.

Also, as a single straight guy, I am eagerly awaiting a Gal Chat episode.

Listen to the FE on Stern. He is already backtracking from the conflict. Again, only because he couldn't care less.

She nailed it with the Barbie doll comment. There is no conflict. She is now only working through the experience of being used by a narcissist for herself (and to a MUCH lesser extent for her fans who care about her). Nobody really knows how to do this. But it is not projecting a type of humanity on the narcissist.

If FE was more human he could have made it work so that he had an ally for life the way Jimmy Kimmel and Kevin Smith just collect collaborators. Yes, he is plenty successful, and he can't be more human. So this is just an observation, not a recommendation.

  48. AndrewviaMR March 14, 2015 at 2:19 am #

I don't think DG meant to shut her down. Think of it as two parts. There is her own working through it mentally. Then there is the on-air. Alison says that they overlap for her. I suspect DG was talking about how the on-air might just stir up more angst. She's fine.

Hey Alison, have you considered talking to Ray? Maybe that is nuts.

  49. AndrewviaMR March 14, 2015 at 2:29 am #

More podcasts. Energy, no energy, don't care. I even thought the “I have to whisper because hubbies is sleeping and sometimes I like to podcast myself” was funny.

This is also going to sound crazy. Go to youtube and look up “furious destroyer and jen.” THEY just bought a house.

More swings at the plate. One might even go out of the park.

Listening to the clip of Adam on Stern………Sounds worse than when AC speaks of how Gavin Newsome answers questions….Listen to the demeanor of Adam and Alison on the reasons for firing and it's very clear who's version in closer to the “truth” How AC can get anyone to follow this BS line of Pirate ship, grit, honor, respect is funny to me. Yet tons of people still gave money to Frank McCourt when he owned the Dodgers…Clown Shoes

“Who wakes up one day after 4 years and fires an employee by email?” Then tells a story of how he was a hero making sure Conway got a send off – When you think of it….very very very very very few people on the planet. But Adam's ric…. so F off

I was really surprised when Dustin gave you the “move one” gesture / suggestion. I agree it probably came from a good place – he cares about you and wants you to be ok and not feel anxiety. However, he was incorrect and I'm glad you talked about that and said what you wanted to say. Yay for YOU! That's what this is all about – doing what you want to do and being yourself. Bravo!

Anything Ray would have to say would just be attributed to the fact that he's a loser. Besides Adam is his cash cow.

I agree with Dustin. Ranting about Adam isn't really a good fit for the Thursday show. It is a good fit for bonus episodes though. It also would likely be a good fit for the upcoming Lisa May show (as Dustin also hinted).

Funny, everyone was participating in the conversation – including Dustin – before he brought it to a screeching halt with no warning. One would think that someone who knows Alison as well as he does would have known how she would interpret his abruptly hitting the brakes on a fairly sensitive topic.

He gave a sort of nervous/uncomfortable laugh right after he made the gesture, so I put it down to his own personal discomfort. His quip afterwards about people slamming him on the Twitter feed he never looks at came off as kind of arrogant. Overall the whole thing was pretty thoughtless.

So, DG isn't allowed to have his opinion? He actually said “I don't want to censor you, but there's lots of other wonderful subjects on the show.” What, when the mob gets angry we can't even believe the exact words someone says? He even jokes about getting the hate tweets.

I think there are two different things people are confusing here. I don't think he was implying you censor yourself at all from a content standpoint. Possibly he was sensing that the segment was getting long in the tooth and approaching rant tenor, and to use another sports analogy it was like a point guard who is driving to the basket out of control. Not that that is bad, but I think it's fine for someone in a conversation to feel like it's time to regain control or move to a funner subject. It was also getting harder for others to have a conversation. Have me on, I'll talk for hours. J/k.

Maybe I'm totally off-base, but just because the issue you had on your mind was self-censorship doesn't mean that is what was in DG's mind.

I don't think she was ranting – she was expressing herself and her feelings on her own show. Ranting is something what's his name does – going on and on to nth degree. I think the more she “keeps it real” (which is part of her brand), the better.

I am a fan of Dustin and while I think he shouldn't have stopped her, it's good that he felt comfortable enough with her to express his discomfort and it just shows Alison's character and all that she presents herself to be, good or bad, that she listened to him, which shows that Carolla's misrepresentation of her, which all seemed out of character for who we know her to be, was ridiculous.

Alison then remarked that, contrary to her pre-cough statement, she was going to allow herself to be censored. It's curious that someone would take Goot's statement at face value. I wouldn't expect him to come out and say, for instance, “I don't want to censor you, but we should move on because I'm uncomfortable.” People say “I don't want X, but…” with everything after “but” explaining why they do want X. They do it so often that it's part of the culture now.

Alison said that she felt shamed when Goot gestured at his watch. She did a 30 minute special episode to “finish what I had started to say before Dustin stepped in.” Yet it's the mob that can't believe someone's exact words? Please. The proof is in the pudding, and the pudding is saying that you're totally off base. Personally, I'd rather a subject approach rant tenor than see the host, who by her own admission struggles with expressing herself on contentious subjects, shamed for the sake of what a guest considers good pod.

I had forgotten that she had said that she felt shame when Dustin stopped her. He likely didn't mean to do that, but I can't blame her for feeling that way. It certainly makes sense for how she's explained herself to be to us for the last almost four years. I've maintained that she should do what feels right to her, so I'm glad that she took the time to explain what she needed to explain. I didn't need to hear it, since I was already with her all the way, but I totally get how it's cathartic to give your side to a story that has been told about you, especially in a situation with such high stakes as this.
