I just watched WWII in HD last night on the History Channel.....and now just read your article! Powerful stuff Ro Ro....But I wasn't quite sure on the "It was as-told-to me" statement. Did the author tell you this story and you paraphrased for a short article in the New Yorker or did you have more of a role in the book? I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack.

If nobody told you today....You are an awesomely talented writer! Is "awesomely" a word!?!??! Probably not!

Great job with the story. Very vivid imagery, it was if I was being persecuted with them. It would be awesome if they made a movie out of this story.

I ordered the book this morning after reading your article, Alison. What really struck me about it (other than how beautifully it's written and how horrifying the story) is how this woman who was hired as a nanny spent years risking her life to protect Michael. She wasn't a relative of his. She didn't owe him or his family anything. She was hired as a servant and could have walked away at any time. Yet she stayed with him knowing that any day might be her last. What a saint. How many people would do that?

And yet, there are a lot of stories of people who showed that kind of courage during the war. In the worst of times, there always seem to be a few who can rise above seemingly hopeless circumstances and prevail.
